Walking around the Rainer exhibition, mostly black and white photographs, choreographic notes, scribbles and instructions - and video- and audio pieces, I felt amongst friends.
The dance piece was less impressive, practically there were no seats for all of the audience and I felt the quality was not as high as I had hoped. I felt that the choice of costume was too casual and not interesting enough for the piece or the body wearing the various pieces if too casual clothing. I also felt the clothing stopped the performers move sufficiently flexibly through the piece. The casual everyday here could have been better coordinated.
I left the performance early and enjoyed peaceful time in the gallery spaces in the beautifully restored building. The audio was interesting as it described the various way the body and parts of body can move ('shoulders, head, torso..' Etc), after a while the voice became too monotonous and I wandered on through the show. There was not much new, that I hadn't seen in books before, so great to see the real thing, although I was hoping to see much more / and particularly of the Judson time and collaborators. Some were seen, but not near as much as there should have been. I also think there should have been more about the time and place.
