Culture and the everyday

Today started at Somerset House, with Isabella Blow Fashion Galore. Particularly enjoyed the short film of the shadow sculpture of Isabella by Tim Noble and Sue Webster (2002). Hearing the conversations between the lines was fun.

Also if course all the garments, hats etc. but would have liked to see more about Blow as a person and her deeper, hidden side. Sadly no photography allowed. Lots of rubbish being sold in the shop, as usual at these places.

Wandered around Coven Garden and saw this in Slam City Skates

Then I walked to ICA on The Mall for the 2pm screening of All of this can happen by David Hinton and Siobhan Davies. I struggled to stay awake in the cinema, found myself falling asleep several times, all I wanted to to was to sleep but of course I couldn't!!
It was a disappointing film, not really giving me anything new. Too much emphasis on split screen and dull narrative. Wasted afternoon!
But very nice staff at the desk and cinema door, as usual!

Browsed in the bookshop, need to read these in the British Library:

Getting nearer goals

Finished a magazine piece on 'experiencing art and performance buildings' today. Enjoyed writing from a slightly different angle and feel infused to take on more. Sense of achievement.
Library tomorrow with strict action plan to do more of this!!

Stealing a moment

I am stealing a moment of quiet reflection. I close my eyes. I hear. I feel. ..through the headache and constant humming of the air conditioning, projector or noise from the next room.. there is calm.

I just read some of Zumthor's Atmospheres. Page 17 opened up as if it wanted me to read.

Having just given a lecture on Spatial Analysis, encouraging students to engage with space through interacting and experimenting with the use and perception of space, page 17 proved the  relevance to my (often questioned by others) task.

Sadly, I don't think anything came out of this, after all. I was unable to go to the meetings, so not sure of the outcome.

In search for Jockum Nordström

In search of Jockum Nordström I set off to the Camden Arts Centre (2013), about 30 minutes later than my 'absolute very latest time to leave the house' phone reminder. Arriving - amazingly, pretty much on time - after a fierce 4 mile bike ride; awash with hot sweat and huffs and puffs, fan in hand and several bags, as usual, of unnecessary things, placing myself at the back of the crowd.

Well, Jockum could barely be heard, it was mostly the curators voice we could hear, loud and clear. Shame that she (the curator) hadn't thought about the acoustics and that Jockum is a softly spoken Swedish man. I found myself grimacing throughout, searching for allies, or anyone who was willing to put a word in. Nope. This is so typical - people are happy to pretend everything is ok, yet they can't hear a thing! I was not happy but decided to stay put. I can't be the one complaining here. I should have moved to the front, but I didn't feel it appropriate.

Spider choreography

Found the footage I have looked for - sometimes there's just too many things to look through - so in the end it becomes difficult to stay organised.. Must find time to archive and clear space.

Planning to make work inspired by this.

Identities and Landscapes

Performing Landscapes and Identities colloquium 19th July 2013, Stratford Circus, London E15

I attended the last part of this colloquium on Landscapes and Identities, to get some inspiration and ideas for the research I am undertaking on Place. Many topics were relevant and I am sorry I missed most of the speakers. I cycled from North London to Stratford (17 km one way) and set off late, then realised I was not allowed to cycle through the Olympic Park so had to find a way around the huge site in the middle of my planned route.

But actually, the cycling contributed a lot to my day - and to the theme of landscapes and identities, as in a way, the trek was just about that; landscapes and [my] identity. I had time to think and evaluate where I am with the work, writing etc. It is always the best way to clear the congestion of thoughts and ideas - to move; either run or walk or cycle etc - or dance of course.
